Welcome to the Cortisone/Cortisone Shot Page! We've been doing some research on what our members are looking for and have found many people looking for information on cortisone shots, particularly during breastfeeding. So, here's the deal: you can basically find information to support either side. That doesn't help much, does it? Well, I'm not a doctor, so of course you need to be consulting your physician (or child's pediatrician) to give you the best information and advice for your circumstance. Here, however, are some links and brief info that I have found.
I did get a cortisone shot about 6 weeks after my son was born while I was breastfeeding. My rheumatologist, at that time, told me it was safe. From the bits of reading I have done (strictly online, not medical journal sources!! Beware!), I have found information that says it's safe in small doses and not for a prolonged period of time during breastfeeding. I could not find information that said what a small dose was. I did read 1 piece of information that said no longer than 2 weeks (but I was guessing that was oral cortisone). The information that I was able to find stated that there wasn't enough information out there to determine if cortisone was safe during pregnancy. Other information stated it can be correlated to cleft palate during pregnancy. Most of the issues seemed concerned about baby's growth if mom took too much. I have to say my son is short (ranging from 10th-25th percentiles in height), but that both my husband and I are short as well.
